The Five Domes of San Marco in Venice

by Rene Siebring

This photo captures one of Venice's most iconic and recognisable silhouettes: the domes of St Mark's Basilica, as seen from the surrounding rooftops. As the city fans out below you in a warm tangle of red roof tiles, the silver-grey domes rise stately against a deep blue, looming sky. The contrast between the serenity of the moment and the rich, almost lavish architecture of the basilica creates a sense of quiet timelessness.

The fine details of the Byzantine ornaments and gilded crosses atop the domes are beautifully highlighted by the soft sidelights, which subtly highlight the texture of the lead-clad surface. The sculpture breathes history: centuries-old structures still standing in a city constantly shaped by time, water and light.

This composition captures not only the beauty of San Marco, but also the unique perspective of the Venetian rooftop landscape-a hidden world that visitors rarely get to see. The result is a photograph that exudes both stillness and grandeur, an ode to the soul of Venice.
