The Eusebiuskerk or Great Church in Arnhem is the largest and most prominent Protestant church in Arnhem. The church belonged to the Roman Catholic Church until the iconoclasm that took place in Arnhem in 1578-1579. From 1865 onwards, Arnhem also had the Kleine Eusebiuskerk on the Nieuwe Plein, which was demolished in 1990.
During the Second World War the city was the scene of the Battle of Arnhem, a historic airborne operation that took place from 17 to 25 September 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden. The Eusebiuskerk stood in the middle of the line of fire and was almost completely destroyed. Only the destroyed tower rose above the ruins of the city. After the war, the church was rebuilt through an extensive restoration (1947-1964). Today the church is regarded as an icon of reconstruction.
Today the church serves as a multifunctional location. Every year in September a conference is held in which different leaders speak about a war or refugee theme from their own personal conviction and experience.
