This ancient map from around 1900 shows a cartographic representation of the so-called "Oriental Question". The Great Oriental Question, also called Eastern Question or Eastern Question for short, was first the issue of how nationalist movements of various Christian peoples in the Ottoman Empire and the imperialist ambitions of major European powers could be satisfied without completely destroying the Ottoman Empire and later when the Ottoman Empire could not be saved anyway and would soon give up the ghost, how the Ottoman Empire could be divided up in such a way without upsetting the balance of power between different European powers, as this would risk creating an all-out war between the European powers.
