The Dark Poetry of the Hydrangea by Silva Wischeropp

I discovered this magnificent, full hydrangea bloom on 20 August 2016 in a Danish garden. The photograph was taken with a NIKON D90 (lens: SIGMA 18.0–50.0 mm f/2.8).

I then used a colour gradient (in Photoshop) to bathe the hydrangea bloom in various colours. This transformed the floral motif into a dark, dreamy, magical and unique atmosphere.

The botanical name Hydrangea is derived from the Greek words ‘hydro’ (water) and ‘angeion’ (jug). The botanist Jan Frederik Gronovius chose this name as early as 1739, as the plant’s seed pods resemble a water jug and the hydrangea generally has very high water requirements. The German name ‘Hortensie’ probably derives from the Latin word ‘hortensius’, which simply means ‘belonging to the garden’.

The hydrangea primarily symbolises gratitude, high regard and deep admiration. Due to its opulent, pompous flower heads, it stands for generosity and abundance in a positive sense, but in a negative context within the language of flowers, it can also express vanity and arrogance.

The specific message conveyed by the hydrangea varies greatly depending on the colour of the flower chosen:
Blue: Represents deep feelings, trust, harmony and tranquillity. It is ideal for conveying a sincere apology.
Pink: Symbolises romance, affection, love and joie de vivre. It is traditionally a popular gift for a fourth wedding anniversary.

White: Embodies purity, grace, innocence and elegance. It often also signals a desire for moderation and pride.

Violet/Purple: Represents spirituality, prosperity and creativity. It often expresses a deep connection.
