The Colour Seller

by Wim's Pastelart

This colourful and weathered pastel artwork captures the essence of the market in Chinchero, situated high up in the Peruvian Andes near Cuzco.

At the centre is a local woman, surrounded by the beautiful, handmade fabrics and rugs she is selling, which are so characteristic of this historic region.

The composition stands out for its brilliant use of vibrant and contrasting colours. The shades of purple and blue in the woven fabrics on display in the foreground immediately catch the eye and showcase the rich texture of the pastel medium. The woman is wearing her traditional attire, including the recognisable red headdress (montera) and a finely detailed waistcoat featuring bright red and green accents. The background exudes the rustic atmosphere of the Andes. An old, roughly plastered wall in warm ochre and earth tones, a characteristic stone wall and a striking green wooden door frame the scene perfectly. With a loose, expressive touch, a beautiful balance has been created between the figurative subject and an almost impressionistic atmosphere.

This cultural portrait pays tribute to the centuries-old craftsmanship of the weavers from Chinchero and brings a piece of the Peruvian soul straight into your home.
