Highlanders on Lundy Island

by Wim's Pastelart

Highlanders on Lundy Island (UK) This pastel painting depicts two Scottish Highland cattle in a vast, golden-yellow landscape on Lundy Island in Great Britain. Their warm, rust-brown coats stand out strikingly against the vibrant yellow and orange of the grass and the cool blue of the sea and sky.

The low horizon lends the landscape a sweeping quality, whilst the clouds above the sea create a subtle interplay of light and colour. The sky is not simply blue, but composed of soft shades of turquoise, lilac, pink and cream. These unexpected colour combinations lend the scene an almost dreamlike atmosphere.

With loose, expressive strokes of pastel, the emphasis is not on every individual detail, but on the impression of the landscape as a whole: the warm colours of the grass, the sturdy silhouettes of the animals and the shifting light on the coast. The Highland cattle seem to be moving calmly across the field together, perfectly at home in this open, natural setting.

The contrast between the warm earth tones and the cool colours of the sky and sea makes this work an ode to the rugged beauty of Lundy Island, where animals, landscape and light come together to form a harmonious whole.
