The Weerdsluis lock forms the connection between the Utrecht city canal and the Vecht. The lock was built in the Middle Ages to maintain the water level in the Utrecht canal and canal system. Around the lock, a suburb called Bemuurde Weerd, which itself was also walled and fenced in, was formed as early as 1300. In shipping, the Vecht was an important link between Amsterdam and the Rhine River.
