About "The Beggar Monk (Yoroboshi), Kazan Shimomura - 1915"

About the artwork

Coloured ink and gold leaf on paper. It hangs in the Tokyo National Museum and is registered as an important cultural asset by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The screen shows a scene from a famous Noh play of the same name. In the scene, the blind monk has been falsely accused of a crime. Disowned by his family, he wanders around, living like a tramp. Although he is blind now, he has become one with the universe and can see everything around him. Kanzan borrowed heavily from the Momoyama period and the Edo style and composition, and the work shows a strong Rimpa influence.

Kanzan Shimomura (April 10, Wakayama City, 1873-10 May 1930) was the pseudonym of a nihonga painter in Meiji until the early Shōwa period in Japan. The real name of the Japanese artist was Shimomura Seizaburō.

In terms of style, Kanzan was influenced by the Rinpa and Kanō schools, as well as by early Buddhist paintings and the Tosa school Emakimono. With these elements he combined the realism that was developed through his exposure to Western art during his stay in England.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers. Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
