On 2 August 1831, Dutch troops invaded Belgium, which had seceded in 1830. The Battle of Bautersem took place near Leuven. The horse of the prince of Orange, the later King William II, was shot. Nicholas Pieneman recorded this heroic moment. The Ten-day Campaign stirred up national feelings, but ended in a truce. Belgium remained independent.
