About ‘The Artist as a Style Icon’ by BS

In this variation on Van Gogh’s self-portrait, the Dutch master wears large, dark designer sunglasses that completely cover his eyes. Unlike the previous version, where the glasses rest on his head, this composition creates a completely different atmosphere. Van Gogh’s vulnerable gaze is hidden behind the dark lenses, transforming him from a tormented genius into an unapproachable style icon. The brown coat and white shirt are closer to the original self-portrait, whilst the sunglasses are the sole modern element. It is precisely this simplicity that makes this work so powerful. The pointillist background in blue and green contrasts beautifully with the warm skin tones and reddish beard.
