About "Thailand Longtail boat"

by Kim van Rossum

About the artwork

The picture shows one of the many long-tail boats carrying tourists to and from Railay beach.
Railay is a small peninsula off the Thai coast between Krabi and Ao Nang. It can only be reached by boat. The area is known for its beautiful beaches and peaceful atmosphere, which is why more and more backpackers are flocking to the peninsula

In countries like Thailand, longtail boats also have cultural significance and are seen as a symbol of traditional waterfront life. Tourists often associate these boats with exotic destinations and adventures at sea.

Longtail boats remain an important means of transport in many parts of Southeast Asia and are appreciated for their simplicity, efficiency and adaptability to different water conditions.

Advantages
Manoeuvrability: The long drive shaft and propeller placement allow longtail boats to manoeuvre easily in shallow water and over obstacles such as water plants or mud banks.

Versatility: The simple construction of the longtail boat makes it easy to fit different engines, from small engines for calm water to more powerful engines for use in the open sea.

Maintenance: The engines used on longtail boats are often recycled engines from cars or trucks. This makes maintenance and repair cheap and easy compared to more specialised boat engines.

Although longtail boats are efficient and versatile, they also have some drawbacks:

Safety: The exposed propeller and long drive shaft can be dangerous if not operated correctly.
Noise: Longtail boat engines can be noisy, which can be a problem in tourist areas.
