The small harbor in the photo, named "Het haventje van Sil" (The Little Harbor of Sil), on the island of Texel, holds a fascinating piece of history. It was first constructed in 1835. For a time, it was used by local fishermen. But when the dike needed to be raised in 1966, the original harbor was demolished.
It was later rebuilt by a skipper named Sil. He owned a boat that he used as a ferry between Texel and Vlieland. He thought the site of the former harbor would be a suitable location from which to launch his ferry.
Despite his better judgment and the advice of people around him, he made plans to rebuild the harbor. Ultimately, he succeeded.
And thanks to this man's persistence, I was able to take this photo. Perhaps it will be hanging on your wall in a few days ;-)
