One of the icons of the island of Texel: the lighthouse.
This lighthouse has not always been there. Many ships perished in the Eierlandse grounds around the head of the island. The Texel notary Johannes Ludovicus Kikkert therefore took action to build a lighthouse on the northern tip of the island. The lighthouse was completed in 1864. From that moment on, the Texel coast had become much safer.
In the aftermath of the Second World War, the tower was severely damaged by shelling. Rebel Georgian soldiers, prisoners of war of the Germans, had entrenched themselves there.
After the war it was necessary to put up an extra wall to restore the tower. Most people today know this form.
