About the artwork

The Drenkelingenhuisje on Terschelling is a historic beacon of human compassion and survival in the unforgiving forces of nature. Located on the island's beach, this small, modest cottage bears a profound history that reflects Terschelling's maritime traditions and sense of community.

Originally built in 1663, the Drenkelingenhuisje served as a shelter for stranded sailors who had braved the rough waters of the North Sea. These men, often weakened and exhausted, found refuge and protection from the elements here. The cottage was equipped with a fire pit to provide warmth and dryness for those who needed it.

It is not only a tangible proof of humanity, but also a reminder of the dangers of the sea and the courage of islanders who often risked their own lives to save others. The Drowning House symbolises the strong bond between the island community and the sea, and the importance of solidarity and help in times of need.

Today, the Drenkelingenhuisje is a protected monument honouring the history and values of Terschelling. It remains a place of reflection and respect for those who braved the sea and reminds us that the power of human kindness should never be lost.

What are the delivery times?

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers. Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
