About "Terschelling drunken cottage enjoys peace and quiet"

About the artwork

Footsteps (my own haha) lead to the cottage. The sun is setting. The wind is brisk, creating beautiful light and small dunes on the beach.

The last evening light falls over the beach, Further ahead are pools of water.

The Drenkelingenhuisje, also called "the húske op 'e Hoek" in the Terschelling vernacular, is a former shelter for survivors after a shipwreck. At the time, this point on Oosterend was a remote spot with an erratic sea, where many shipwrecks occurred. Therefore, in 1863, this emergency shelter on the northeast coast of the island was created, equipped with blankets and provisions. Here, castaways could shelter safely for a few hours until the sun rose or the storm passed.

When the original Drenkelingenhuisje was badly damaged in 1953, it was refurbished. But in the storm of 16 February 1962, it is still torn apart. With that, the last Drenkelingenhuisje in the Netherlands disappears. The historical loss soon became apparent: in 2000, a replica of the house was built on the old posts of the original structure, which was later moved a kilometre and a half to the west.

Terschelling's Drenkelingenhuisje has now become cultural heritage and also represents image for Terschelling.
