About the artwork

With its backdrop of international Tall Ships, SAIL Amsterdam is the largest public event in the Netherlands. Since 1975, SAIL has also grown into Europe's largest free nautical event. Every five years, over 600 ships sail through the North Sea Canal to moor in and around the IJhaven. From 19 to 23 August 2015, SAIL will be organised for the ninth time.

This impressive Tall Ship was built as a freighter. In 1926, she was launched at the Tecklenburg yard, near Bremerhaven. This steel four-masted barque is the second largest traditional sailing ship in the world still sailing after the Sedov. Her home port is Kaliningrad; she entered service as Padua and is the last sailing cargo ship built at that time. Together with the Pamir, Passat, Preussen, Pommern and Peking, she was part of the Flying P-line from Hamburg. She is the only one of these ships still sailing. In particular, the ship was used to transport construction materials to South America and then took Salpeter on the return voyage.

After the end of the war, the ship was handed over to the Soviet Union on 12 January 1946 as part of reparations. In the process, she was renamed Kruzenshtern and joined the Russian Navy as a training ship in 1955. Since 1966, the ship has been owned by the Ministry of Fisheries. The Kruzenshtern has a length of 114.5 metres, a draft of 6.8 metres and flies the Russian flag.
