The shining cross
Legend has it that Hubert (or Huibrecht) once led a normal and worldly life. He was born in the year 656 as the son of the Duke of Aquitaine, it is unclear whether he was born in Toulouse or in the Voer region in Belgium. As a man of nobility, hunting was one of Hubert's favourite pastimes. When his young wife died in childbirth after giving him a son, Hubert decided to throw himself entirely into hunting. Even on Good Friday, Hubertus also took to the forest to go hunting. At one point, Hubertus had a beautiful large deer in his sights. The moment Hubertus saw his chance to shoot the deer, the animal turned towards him. A luminous cross appeared between the deer's antlers. At the same time, a voice sounded saying: ''Hubertus, why are you wasting your time in such pursuits? If you do not turn to the Lord, you will go to hell.'' Hubertus knelt down on hearing these words and asked what he should do then. The voice replied ''Go to my servant Lambert and do as he tells you.''
