Swimming Grebe, with backlight.
Like all members of this family, the great crested grebe is a typical water bird of lakes and lakes. His dark ear plumes give him a characteristic appearance. He has a white face with a reddish-brown and black collar around it, which is erected at the courtship ritual. Its underside is white, from above it is dark to rusty brown. Between eye and beak is a black stripe. The legs have no flippers. The young are striped in black and white and often take a ride behind the back of their parents. The parents greet each other with an extensive courtship ritual.
Because the legs are quite far back on the body, the great crested grebe is not able to move easily on foot across the land. Nests are therefore preferably built close to the water's edge. A very characteristic feature is the ability to swim reasonably long distances under water. This is done to eat fish, or to flee in case of danger.
The average length of a great crested grebe is between 46 and 51 cm.
