This photo was taken on a clear evening in March, in Friesland near Kollum.
The mill protruded so prominently above the horizon that I thought it worth waiting until the colours in the sky reached their peak for a nice atmospheric landscape shot.
I used a tripod with a telephoto lens because there was a fence and I couldn't get any closer.
The skimming light on the plumes of reeds along the water's edge kept the foreground from becoming too dark.
The birds in the sky and the ducks on the water make the scene even more vivid.
It was well worth taking your time. When the conditions are this beautiful, I also have to take the time to enjoy it. Especially since afterwards the sun disappeared behind the horizon along with some clouds and the colours had quickly dimmed.
