Photo of a soothing image of a sunset with a beautiful orange sky. The sun is shining from behind the trees. And the trees are reflected in the calm and smooth water of a fen in Orvelte, Drenthe. Sahara sand in the air created the beautiful orange colors in the sky. In the water is a duck decoy. A quiet and calming image.
During work in 2003, employees of the Forestry Commission discovered by chance that a fen was hidden under a layer of reclaimed soil.
In retrospect, they could have known: it had always been a wet spot, which the road avoided. The restored fen has been named 'Vlasveentje' (Flax fen) because of the small bushes of flax that appeared during the excavation. This discovery indicates that this fen, like other fenches in Drenthe, was once used to 'roast' flax. The flax was immersed in water for at least a week to loosen the fibers. The cultivation of flax in Orvelte has
a striking history: from 1917 to 1968 the only flax factory in Drenthe was located here.
