Sunset is the moment when the sun disappears behind the horizon.
The sun has only completely set when the whole disk of the sun is no longer visible, so the daytime duration is on average somewhat longer than the nighttime duration; nighttime begins when the sun has completely set and ends when the first part of the sun is visible. Because of reflection in the atmosphere, it remains light for a while, so sunset is not equal to the moment when it gets dark.
The time between the moment when the Sun has set while it is not yet completely dark is called the evening twilight: twilight is a transition phase and sunset is a moment. It takes 3 to 4 minutes from the moment the first edge of the sun disappears behind the horizon until sunset, due to the diameter of the sun (0.53°). This duration depends on the season and the latitude of the observation; from the equator it takes a little more than 2 minutes. The moment the sun sets is often seen as the end of the day.
