Visible phenomena at sunrise[edit | source text edit] The sky is often red or orange at low sunrise or sunrise.
When the sun is low or rising, the sky is often colored red or orange due to the effect of Rayleigh scattering. When the sun is high, particles in the atmosphere scatter blue light, causing us to see the daytime sky as blue. The other wavelengths remain in the sun's rays giving the sun a slightly yellower colour. However, when the sun is low in the sky, red light is scattered as well, causing the sky around and below the sun to turn red. By the way, this effect is better visible at sunset because the air at the end of the day contains more dust so the scattering is stronger.
