Sunrise at Búðakirkja - Iceland's black church

by Ashwien Jurawan

This image shows the iconic black church of Búðir, known as Búðakirkja, located on the rugged southern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. Photographed during an icy morning with rising sun, this image exudes peace, space and purity. The golden light shining just along the edge of the church creates a beautiful sun star and emphasises the contrast between the black silhouette of the building and the pale, frost-covered grassland in the foreground.

Búðakirkja is a favourite spot among photographers for its solitude and simplicity, in the middle of a vast and dramatic Icelandic landscape. This composition does full justice to that atmosphere: the sky is soft blue and empty, which puts the focus entirely on the subject. The low winter sun and frozen landscape lend an almost picturesque quality to the image.

This minimalist landscape photo is perfect for interiors where tranquillity, natural elements and Scandinavian simplicity come together. Think of a modern living room, a quiet workspace or an atmospheric entrance hall.

Whether you have visited Iceland or dream of travelling north, this image captures that unique feeling of stillness, cold and beauty in one moment.
