The sun is low over the Sinai Desert, casting its rays over a landscape that seems to have remained untouched for centuries. In the foreground, left in the image, you can see the stacked layers of a nawamis; a prehistoric round stone structure believed to have been built between 4000 and 3150 BC, in the Chalcolithic era.
The nawamis are scattered across this area and raise questions about the people who once lived here. Their round shape, constructed from horizontally laid slabs of stone and their openings facing west, make them unique relics of early antiquity.
In this composition, light and stone are brought together. The direct sunlight creates a bright point of radiance that emphasises the emptiness and vastness of the landscape. Together, the silence, the structure and the sun create a powerful image of tranquillity and eternity.
