The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an up to 3 meters high, annual plant from the sunflower family (Asteraceae). Sunflower blooms from July to October. A plant can produce multiple flower heads. The flower head can have a diameter of up to 30 cm. Immature plants whose flower bud is not already open, exhibit heliotropism: daytime running flower bud on sunny days with the sun. At night the flower bud will return to the eastern state. This daily movement is accomplished by uneven growth by cell elongation of flowering stem. A sunflower namely no pulvini (leaf pads). By the time the inflorescence opens, stiffens the panicle in the eastern state. Thereby pointing blooming sunflowers throughout the day to the east; the heliotropism is over.
There is a form of cultivation with a hanging head, which is attractive for farmers because the flowers are less damaged by birds and dirt from the air.
