The fortified Suceviţa Monastery was one of the last monasteries built in this distinctive style. The monastery was built in 1585 and its paintings, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, date from around 1601. Thick walls surround the courtyard of the monastery complex and there are several defensive structures including four protective towers at the corners.
At one time, the Suceviţa Monastery was part of a princely residence. Today, visitors can explore the site and visit a museum that contains a collection of artistic and historical objects. Items on display include burial shrouds, silverware and manuscripts.
