The Ascension of the Virgin Mary or Ascension of Our Lady is the feast day on which the Assumption of Mary into heaven "with body and soul" is commemorated and celebrated. In the Old Catholic and Orthodox Churches, this feast is called Dormition of the Holy Mary, Mother of God or Dormition of the Mother of God.
There are various stories from church traditions about the death of Mary and her subsequent reception into heaven. There is no mention of it in the Bible. Mary is said to have died somewhere between 36 and 50 AD. According to one tradition, all of the apostles were present, except for Tomas. When he arrived, Mary's body was already buried and to honor her, Tomas visited her grave on his own. Tomas then saw the Assumption of Mary. At the same time Mary gave him her girdle. The other apostles did not believe this until he showed them the belt and the empty grave.
Jean-Baptiste-Henri Deshays or Deshayes (Colleville, near Rouen, France, 1729 - Paris, 10 February 1765) was a French painter of religious and mythological subjects.
