The village of Agüimes is separated from Ingenio by the Barranco de Guayadeque ravine. This small but highly attractive town has a picturesque, well-preserved old town centre, with medieval narrow streets and beautiful ochre and terracotta-coloured houses. The cityscape is dominated by the two high towers of the Parroquia de San Sebastián on the Plaza del Rosario. This three-aisled basilica, which has been declared a historic cultural monument, is one of the best examples of neoclassical architecture in the Canary Islands. With an immense dome with an oriental touch, it houses various statues of saints by José Luján Pérez.
