The Neeltje Jans storm surge barrier is an imposing feat of hydraulic engineering located in the Oosterschelde, in the province of Zeeland. It ia an impressive combination of engineering and nature, embodying the essence of the Netherlands' struggle against water. The most striking feature of the storm surge barrier is a series of massive, tall concrete pillars rising out of the water. These pillars carry huge slides that can be lowered in times of imminent flooding to block the passage for the water.
