The Cape buffalo is found across much of Africa. They live on grass plains and savannahs as well as in the dense forests of eastern and southern Africa. It has a bad reputation, being unpredictable and can be dangerous to hunters and people who get too close. However, the animal usually runs away when in danger. A troublesome characteristic of a buffalo is that they can get upset (stampeding) rather quickly, for reasons known only to buffalo. One buffalo may be startled by a bird, start running and then the whole herd stampedes. The Cape buffalo is part of the big five.
