Murnau Castle is located in Markt Murnau am Staffelsee in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The castle of Murnau originated from a fortress; Today it is the castle museum of Murnau. It is a registered monument.

The harvest date of a wooden beam could be dated for the winter of 1232/1233, based on archaeological finds and using the radiocarbon method and dendrochronology. From this, in the research year 1992, the existence of a first building was therefore dated to the first half of the 13th century.

The market Murnau am Staffelsee (officially: Murnau a.Staffelsee) is a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The market was built around Murnau Castle from the 12th century. The place is part of the Das Blaue Land tourist region.
