City park Valkenberg in Breda with "Hercules" in the background.
In the 17th century, William III had Park Valkenberg, then the castle garden of Breda Castle, recreated. It became a French-style garden with seventeen sandstone statues scattered throughout the park in beds. Hercules, a figure from Greek mythology is said to have been the only remaining statue fished out of the park's pond in 1887.
The Hercules now in the park is already the second replica and is made of Italian marble. The original Hercules stands in the Holland Casino.
Colloquially, the statue is called Dirty John, because of his scanty clothes.
