This architectural image of the famous cathedral of Siracusa (Unesco World Heritage Site) on the island of Sicily in southern Italy was taken on 18 April 2013. The fascinating cathedral is an example of high baroque in Italy. The urban motif was photographed with the Nikon D90.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Colonne (St Mary of the Columns) is the main church of the Sicilian city of Syracuse and the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Syracuse in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily. It is located on the highest point of the island of Ortygia, which was both the centre of the settlement and the oldest district of the ancient city. The building incorporates large parts of an ancient temple dedicated to Athena. From the 7th century onwards, under Bishop Zosimus, the church was rebuilt, initially in Byzantine style. After the remodelling and extensions of the following centuries, the cathedral today offers a unique architectural mix. In addition to the parts of the ancient temple that are still recognisable as such, it combines elements of Byzantine architecture, Norman Romanesque and Sicilian Baroque.
