Historic cultural landscape and route of the Oder-Neisse cycle path
Numerous ditches criss-cross the wide landscape of the Oderbruch. In summer, the air sometimes stagnates here. Along the river, the Oder floodplains gnaw irregular lines into the old cultural landscape. The Oder-Neisse cycle path leads right through the middle of the quarry, right past Bad Freienwalde, mostly at the top of the dyke with a view of the leisurely flowing river. It is thanks to Frederick the Great that numerous farmsteads and cultivated fields can be found in this part of the glacial valley today. He had the Bruch drained from 1747 onwards according to plans drawn up by the Dutch hydraulic engineer Simon Leonhard von Haerlem. This created over 32,000 hectares of fertile farmland. From here, many fresh vegetables find their way onto the tables of Berliners every year.
Bad Freienwalde - northern centre of the Oderbruch
The town forms the northern centre of the Oderbruch. The region's settlement history can be seen in the old colonist villages such as Neulietzegöricke, which is now a listed building. The Oderbruch Museum in Altranft shows what everyday life was like back then.
