Jan Luyken, Inhabitants of Spiers bring in their furniture in good faith to the Cathedral, where they are then burned by the French general Monclar, 1689
Speyer (Dutch, historically: Spiers) is a district-free city in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The city is located at the mouth of the Speyerbach in the Rhine.
From 1527 to 1698 the city was the seat of the Reichskammergasse. The reformation was introduced in 1540. During the War of Succession for the Keurpalts in 1689 French troops conquer the city, which is then completely destroyed. The cathedral and almost all churches are set on fire as well as the large secular buildings. The inhabitants were expelled for nine years. After this period there was some recovery.
Jan Luyken or Johannes Luiken (Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands, 16 April 1649 - Amsterdam, 5 April 1712) was a poet, painter and etcher from the 17th century.
