In this fantasy an Undine and a Sphinx come together in a panorama.
An Ondine (or Undine) is a mythological water nymph. Such a nymph also appears in European folklore as eleven. What is special is that the undine has no soul.
A sphinx is a mythical creature that occurs in different cultures and was used in Ancient Egypt as a guard. The image of the sphinx was used to frighten enemies. Usually the monster is half man (head), half lion (body).
Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach (February 21, 1851, Hadamar, then part of the Duchy of Nassau, now Hesse - December 15, 1913) was a German painter and social reformer. He was a pioneer of naturists and peace movements. His ideas included living in harmony with nature and rejecting monogamy, turning away from any religion (although he was a theologian) and a vegetarian diet.
As a painter, Diefenbach was an independent representative of symbolism.
