Spence’s Sun Angel (Heliangelus Spencei), John Gould Up to the present time no species of the genus Heliangelus has been found to the northward of the Isthmus of Panama;—Central America in fact appears, with few exceptions, to have an ornithology peculiarly its own;—the H. Spencei, however, approaches the line of demarcation more nearly than any other, inhabiting, as it does, the extreme northern limit of the country called Columbia. This illustration has been restored to its original vibrancy by enhancing colors and removing unwanted marks. A monograph of the Trochilidæ, or family of humming-birds was published between 1849 and 1887 by English ornithologist John Gould. This monumental work depicts and describes all the known species of hummingbirds at the time - comprising 418 lithographic plates and information on 537 species."
