The space shuttle Atlantis (NASA designation: OV-104) was one of five space shuttles. It was the fourth space shuttle built and one of the three remaining shuttles after the crashes of the Challenger and the Columbia.
The Atlantis was named after the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution's main oceanographic research vessel from 1930 to 1966.
Because a lot of experience had been gained from the construction of the Enterprise, Columbia and the Challenger, the construction of the Atlantis (1979-1985) took only half the time it took to build the Columbia. Also, the Atlantis was a lot lighter than the Columbia. The construction of the Atlantis cost NASA $389 million.
The Atlantis was the last space shuttle of the Spaceshuttle program to go into space. This flight, the STS-135, was in July 2011. Now that space shuttle Atlantis has been retired, it is on display at the Kennedy Space Center.
