About ‘South Side’ by Jeroen Quirijns

The title ‘South-Side’ refers to the notorious neighbourhood in Los Angeles,
which reached a regrettable low point in 2000 due to the gang war that claimed many lives.
Fortunately, the situation improved significantly around 2010 thanks to an increased police presence on the streets and the launch of various programmes'designed to make the neighbourhoods safer and support their residents.
What made me decide to paint about this is that it is a fascinating subject.
Human behaviour within a "eigen groep", eigen manier van communicatie; taal en gebaren, graffiti, kleding, auto's etc.
Most residents have a migrant background, with Hispanics and Latinos"s predominating.
You can hardly watch an American action film without this being highlighted.
Many hip-hop artists rap about street culture and the violence they are exposed to in their lives, complete with matching outfits and music videos.
The idea of belonging somewhere, with its associated codes, is human; after all, we do it ourselves. Just take a look at yourself, your clothes, your background, who you are and what you
do.
To avoid glorifying violence, I have used green and light brown as the main colours; the (young) man wears a Mercedes logo around his neck as a status symbol. Eyes have been incorporated into the blue lines in the background; these represent communication – you are being watched!

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
