Skyline of Dordrecht with the Grote Kerk and the railway bridge to Zwijndrecht, Zuid-Holland, the Netherlands. The skyline is a hidden gem on the Oude Maas, only visible from Papendrecht or Zwijndrecht. Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland where in 1572 the First Free States Meeting took place, with which the resistance against the Spanish ruler was forged. The Grote Kerk dates from the 12th century. Later the church was expanded and finished to the construction that it is now. There would actually be a pointed tower, but because the church began to sag, it was never completely finished and finally opted for a blunt tower with a clockwork at the top.
How the church came about is not entirely clear. However, the legend of Sura is known. Sura dreamed about Mary who asked her to build a church. Sura hired three workers and paid daily with three coins out of a pouch. The workers thought she must be very rich. On an evil day they decided to kill Sura. After the murder the men found only three coins in her purse and then it remained empty. The men were arrested and sentenced to death, but they were allowed to live. During the trial the murdered Sura appeared. The men were released on condition that they would go to the Pope in Rome with Sura to ask for forgiveness. They got it and with the help of indulgences the church in Dordrecht could be finished by the men.
