About ‘Skûtsjesilen at lemmer tacking’ by Johan Swaneveld

SKûtsjesilen is a traditional sailing competition held in Friesland, the Netherlands. The event revolves around flat-bottomed ships called skûtsjes, which were originally used for freight transport in the region's lakes and canals. During the races, these historic sailing ships race against each other.

Each skûtsje represents a specific town or village in Friesland and has its own crew. The races usually take place in the summer months and attract thousands of spectators along the shores of the Frisian waters.

These races are not only a sporting event, but also a celebration of Frisian culture and maritime traditions. The skippers and crews are passionate sailors who often pass on hereditary knowledge about sailing skûtsjes from generation to generation.

SKûtsjesilen is known for its exciting races and intense competition, with often tight turns and tactical sailing. The event strengthens the pride and belonging of Frisian communities and attracts sailing and culture enthusiasts from all over the world. It is an indispensable part of the Frisian summer and a wonderful way to experience Friesland's rich history.
