Bruges windmills were built in the 13th century on the fortress, during the creation of the outer city wall. The Sint-Janshuis Mill dates from 1770 and is in its original location. The mills had an important economic function until well into the 19th century. To this day, they define the appearance of the eastern ramparts of the city. The Sint-Janshuismolen is the only one of four windmills on the city fortress where grain is still actually ground. The millers grind the grain as they did centuries ago. When the wind is favorable, you can see the mill and the old technology in operation. If you climb the steep stairs, you have a breathtaking view of the green Bruges city wall.
