Silhouette Elster Tower
The Grote or Sint-Maartenskerk, Sint-Werenfriduskerk or Dutch Reformed Church is a church building in Elst in the Overbetuwe municipality in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The church building stands on an elevation at Grote Molenstraat and Sint Maartenstraat.
In prehistoric times there was an open-air sanctuary of the Batavians on the site of the church building. In Roman times, two Roman temples stood there: the Temples of Elst from the first century AD. There are still remains under and around the church. These are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Lower Germanic Limes.
The oriented church is built in late Lower Rhenish Gothic style and consists of a west tower with three recessed bays, a two-nave nave and a choir. The lower two sections of the tower have a square ground plan and the upper section is octagonal. At the top is a short octagonal spire with a pear-shaped crown. The nave has six bays and a north aisle in pseudobasilical elevation. (Source: Wikipedia)
