The Singel is an Amsterdam canal that runs from the IJ to the Muntplein, where it flows into the Binnen Amstel. The Singel was dug around 1428 from the IJ to the Boerenwetering. Around 1450 the remaining part followed until the Amstel. Until the city enlargement of around 1585, the Singel formed the western city border. From 1481, the earthen wall was replaced with a stone wall. In the Netherlands, the urban water system is the most important part of the urban water system. In the 17th century the Singel was temporarily called Koningsgracht in honour of King Henry IV of France, who was an important ally of the Republic at the time. The 'Koningsplein' is a reminder of this. The Torensluis (tower lock) from 1648 is the oldest surviving bridge and the widest in the entire inner city. This Bridge 9 - near the Old Lily Street - is so wide because the Jan Roodenpoortstoren, which was demolished in 1829, stood here. The dungeons of the tower are still part of the bridgehead. Since 2003, the contours of the former tower have been recognizable in the cobbles on the bridge. Here, next to the statue of Multatuli (Hans Bayens 1987), there are often outdoor cafés.
