About "Silence in the light"

by Esther de Wit

About the artwork

In this photo, the lens captures a moment that feels like a silent scene from a forgotten story. A round room with tall windows, faded by the passage of time, is bathed in soft, diffused daylight. The windows are dirty, yet still clear enough to draw in the greenery from outside — like a memory of life that once flowed in. In the center of the room stands a solitary chair – simple, clinical, abandoned – as if someone suddenly stood up and never returned.

Light falls onto the floor, where faint footprints remain. Who walked here? When? And why? These are questions the silence doesn’t answer, but instead emphasizes. Beside the chair lies a closed suitcase – weathered, forgotten, perhaps never to be retrieved.

The room breathes an atmosphere of abandonment, but also of peace. The symmetry of the windows, the elegant ceiling with its arched lines, and the old door that seems not to have opened in years, give the space a certain dignity. As if it’s waiting. Not just for someone, but for meaning, for memory, for recognition of what once was.

This photo is more than a captured space. It is a snapshot of a past that still lingers, held in dust and light. A place where time seems to have stopped, where silence speaks – and where the presence of absence is almost tangible. This is no ordinary room. This is a remnant of a story still longing to be heard.
