Šibenik is a city on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, about 300 kilometers south of Zagreb. The city is the capital of Šibenik-Knin county.
Unlike other cities on the coast founded by Illyrians, Greeks and Romans, Šibenik is one of the oldest cities founded by local Croats.
From the Bay of Šibenik, which is 10 kilometers long and 300 to 1,200 meters wide, one enters the open sea and island territory via a narrow and winding channel.
The city is home to St. James Cathedral, which is part of UNESCO's World Heritage List. Also on the World Heritage List is the fortress of St. Nicholas, as one of the Venetian defenses from the 15th to 17th centuries.
