Ships at the Roadstead, Willem van de Velde the Younger
Willem van de Velde, following in his father's footsteps, specialized in paintings with ships. Here he gives an impression of an almost windless day on the water. On the right, the crew of a three-master hoists the headsail, while a passenger is taken ashore in a rowboat. The activities are observed from the yacht in the foreground on the right. The stern of the ship is richly decorated, including a red Dutch lion and the coat of arms of Amsterdam.
