About the artwork

Shipping on the Westerschelde off the coast of Vlissingen, Zeeland, the Netherlands. A pilot boat returns to the base after having guided a cargo ship, visible in the background, through the channel on the Westerschelde.

The Westerschelde (Zeelandic: D'Onte) (obsolete: Honte) is an estuary in the Dutch province of Zeeland, situated between Walcheren and Zuid-Beveland on the north side and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen on the south side. Unlike the Oosterschelde, the Grevelingen and the Haringvliet, it is not closed off as part of the Delta Works. The reason for this is that the port of Antwerp remains accessible in this way.

The Western Scheldt is the estuary of the Scheldt. As a rule, the part from the Belgian-Dutch border to the North Sea is called the Western Scheldt, from the Belgian-Dutch border via Antwerp to Ghent is called the Zeescheldt. The westernmost part of the Western Scheldt has two main waterways to the North Sea. The Wielingen is the widest and is used by shipping to the Southern North Sea. Shipping to the north uses the Oostgat, a relatively narrow channel along the south-western coast of Walcheren. The deepest point of the Western Scheldt lies near Borssele, where the estuary reaches a depth of 67 metres below sea level. This is also the deepest point of the Dutch continental shelf.
