Shells on a stone plinth, Adriaen Coorte, 1698 Coorte placed the shells on a stone plinth against a dark background. This way, each specimen gets attention, with its own shape, colour and texture. Moreover, Coorte painted them full-size. Such exotic shells came to the Netherlands on the ships of the VOC and WIC and were a favourite object among collectors. They paid large sums for them.
