Evening photo of the Sheikh Zayed mosque in Abu Dhabi. It is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the seventh largest in the world. The mosque is named after Sheikh Zayid bin Sultan al Nuhayyan, the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, who is also buried there.
The design of the Sheikh Zayed Mosque is based on the Mongolian and Moorish mosque architecture. The Badshahimosque in Lahore and the Hassan II mosque in Casablanca had direct influences. The dome and floors of the mosque are inspired by the Badshahimosque and the architecture on both the Mongolian and Moorish design. The colonnades are typically Moorish and the minaret classical Arabic. The design of the mosque can best be described as a fusion of Arabic, Mongolian and Moorish architecture.
